On Friday, October 24th, our ever-growing Alpha Epsilon Beta chapter introduced all sixteen pledges to their Bigs in Macintosh Activities room. The Big-Little ceremony is a sacred rite of passage into our fraternity, but as we all know, not every event goes according to plan 100% of the time! While the brothers who were gaining new Littles introduced themselves to said Littles, their candles burned out constantly. This induced a fit of giggles from many brothers and pledges! Thankfully, Secretary Lauren Nye had a lighter on hand for just this kind of “emergency!”
Even though this sacred ceremony should always have some semblance of formality, we want our Littles to be comfortable and feel welcome with us. The little things that annoy some people are what we remember for years and continue to laugh about when we participate in the next Big-Little Ceremony. After singing the Toast Song, Public Relations chair Blake Lundy rounded up all of the brothers and pledges for an AEB Chapter Family Photo. Ten minutes and countless Sorority Squats later, we had a beautiful arrangement of brothers and pledges, complete with our large painted APhiO letters! We then had separate family photos taken for the Snowbunnies, Hot Asses, Epsilon and FamBam families in the four corners of Mactivities with those Royal Blue and Old Glory Gold letters.
Recent graduates of Ohio Northern University and alums of Alpha Phi Omega showed their Spark by coming back to campus that night as well! Kirsten Fuelling, Brittany Ribley, Carmen Cano and our former president Cody Fennig celebrated with us, and Natalie Schoen, our former Secretary and a member of the Zeta Kappa chapter at Bowling Green, came to support her little Stephanie Meyer in her APO journey.
No right or wrong answer exists for whether or not you should take a Little. Know yourself and be prepared to be surprised- you never know who will choose you as a Big! When I joined in Spring 2014, I did not think that I would have Twin Littles one year later! The three of us continue to support and look out for each other, since we are a family. I hope that all of you find strength and lots of love in your families as well!
