What has inspired the Alpha Epsilon Beta chapter and potential new members to give back to the community in a fun and festive way this winter? The answer: Puppies! This past Tuesday night, we all had a blast making dog toys out of colorful fleeces for the fluffy, residents of the Humane Society of Allen County in Lima, Ohio. Some undercover artists created intriguing fishtail braids and Chinese ladders on their toys, while others tied knots upon knots. Google some braiding patterns if you want to make fantastic designs of your own. It’s never too late to learn how! During our rush event, the brothers’ reenactments of our favorite classic SpongeBob episodes and karaoke renditions of Taylor Swift’s and Beyoncé’s latest hits had us all in stitches! Most importantly, tons of people signed up to see the pups on Saturday!

As Brother Jenni Point proclaimed, “The Puppy Project was a howling success!” Over twenty active brothers and rushers dedicated their Saturday morning to cleaning cages, walking adorable puppies, and mopping up some muddy footprints after taking the cute canines outside for playtime. There were so many volunteers that we had to divide ourselves into an early group and a late-morning group. We had called News 7, a local station, to interview us and some employees of the Humane Society, whom we had naturally notified beforehand. The volunteer coordinator and animal caretakers were so welcoming and happily surprised by our numbers of helping hands, which made the experience that much more heart-warming. From start to finish, we were given tasks including laundry, brushing the fur of adorable felines, and cleaning windows. The Society’s volunteer coordinator asked us to gather for a picture at the end of our visit and encouraged us to come back for more volunteer events! We truly could not imagine a better end to Rush Week 2015 after all the great times we have had.

Rachel Bulko
